K-9 Professional Handler Course

CERTIFIED K-9 HANDLER COURSE PURPOSE

Being a Professional K9 Handler in today’s world is one of the most stressful, dangerous professions to being a police officer.  After the attacks in the United States on September 11, 2001, and the fight against domestic and foreign terrorism, the influx and need for Private Professional Handlers throughout the world increased by the thousands.  Unfortunately, this caused a lot of Trainers to make hands-on handler courses extremely short, and with no course curriculum learning for the handler, leaving the new handler with many questions in their mind about when, why, and how they are to utilize their K9 on the street.  Although a new K9 Handler received initial training for hands-on K9 Handling, the quickly academy “McDonaldization” unfortunately has the Private Professional K9 Handler deploying/working In-The-Field as a Service Dog Team on the front lines with little or no education as a handler, expected to immediately assume the full responsibilities of an educated and experienced K9 Handler.  K9 Handler schools prior to 9/11 where respectfully over 480 hours, Now/Today roughly 120 hours.

K-9FTO noticed the lacking in training for the K9 Teams (Handler & K9).  Besides the reason behind K-9FTO Field Training Officer Course, where there was absolutely no training in the country for the K9 Handlers transition from the initial academic training to the deployment of the K9 Team working the streets, K-9FTO has now created the K-9FTO Canine Handler Course.

After several meetings, and consultations by additional K9 Field Experts, the K-9FTO Canine Handler Course curriculum was created and the K-9FTO Field Training Officer Program and Canine Handler Manual were created. The goal is not to tell the handler how to train, or tell departments where to train or where to get there department k9’s, because this can very across The United States and Worldwide.  The goal of this K-9FTO Canine Handler Course is to bridge the gap between the hands-on training that they may have received and the academic course training for the handler, and the real street deployment, and add consistency the training of one of the most important parts of the K9 Team, THE HANDLER.  This type of K-9FTO Handler Training along with the Manuals Curriculum will help the industry.

Once a trainee-handler has completed this course they should not have any questions in their mind about when, why, and how they are to utilize their K9 on the street.  In-turn this will assist in lowering liability and heighten officer safety.

Certified K-9FTO Canine Handlers will have met or exceeded the K-9FTO Program criteria, which includes a 40-hour Online Course.

After the completion of the 40 hour Online Course, the Certified K-9FTO Canine Handler will have demonstrated the understanding of all facets of Canine Handling, including K9 related case law, and the ability to impart that knowledge and its real-world application in professional Canine Handling.

The K-9FTO will serve as a comprehensive resource to the handler-trainee for all things K9, from basic history and home kenneling, to the most advanced tactics and methods expected from a K9 Team in the field.
